Christopher Columbus Lands in Newport!

One January morning in 2010, Columbus arrived at Newport City Elementary School to address the natives, forty-five 6th graders who, this time, were prepared for him.  Their teacher, Gina Miller, had shared lessons that included reading Columbus’ log, learning about his voyages and debating his character.  Hank Fincken, National Theater actor and student of teacher, portrayed Christopher Columbus as he returns from his first visit to the New World and then again as he speaks to the Royal Court of Spain.  Hank shared his research completed in the Dominican Republic and Spain and interspersed his acting with questions from the class.  The 6th graders had over 25 questions prepared and were able to ask half of them.  They were treated to a sophisticated performance that also had the students thinking about how we judge people and events out of their time period and how to differentiate between fact and fiction.  The students and teachers also learned more information to add to their knowledge base and found Hank to be very believable as Columbus.  More information about Hank Fincken’s history programs can be found at www.hankfincken.com.

Collaboration Between Irsaburg, VT and Howe, OK

Hi all,

I wanted to share a news story from OK that features a virtual fieldtrip between Irasburg School and a school in OK.

A little background:  The teacher in Irasburg is Sean Wallace.  Sean has been an active user of video conferencing and the content dollar bank via the Learning Network of VT (supported by Title IID funds).  Sean and Tammy Parks (a teacher in OK) found each other via school-to school collaboration listings (listing was on CILC the organization where we have the content dollar bank).  Prior to the session featured in the OK broadcast, Sean and Tammy did work using Google Earth placemarks.  The students in Irasburg put together information on VT’s Northeast Kingdom using google placemarks and the students in OK did the same.  The two classes then met via video conferencing.  In preparation for the fieldtrip led by the OK students, Sean also did an activity with his students using antique map layers in Google earth to trace the Trail of Tears in preparation for this fieldtrip.

The Irasburg  6th graders would like to develop their own fieldtrip. In addition the fieldtrip featured below there also was a web piece and a moodle site where kids did preassessment quizzes and were able to view hi-res images from the museums collection.

The teacher in OK noted:

We enjoyed Brandon's enthusiasm for the "Haversack" activity!  The reporter's questions were keeping him away from his task at hand - sewing!  Thanks again for your willingness to "try something new"  and take a chance on an Okie Field Trip.  My students want to continue our collaboration with you guys!  We feel like you all are family now!  We refer to you as our friends from Vermont!

Hi Arlyn and other LNV users,

At Dothan Brook School in Wilder, VT, we were the recipients of a title IIDgrant from the Department of Ed, and we have been LOVING the videoconferencing equipment that we received. Last year, the first grade in the building "went" to the St. Louis Zoo to talk with biologists about penguins. This year, my classroom is collaborating with a classroom full of kids in Kentucky about a novel. We're all reading RASCAL by Sterling North. We agreed to meet virtually at the half way point to discuss some of the differences between life in 1918 and life now. What a great connection for kids to make that life in 2009 Vermont is very different that 2009 Kentucky! Also, we're trying to set up a Q&A wth Senator Leahy. He'd be using Skype and we'd be using the videoconferecing equipment. What an amazing way to interact with a real person! We'll let you know how it all goes. Oh yeah... and we're studying the properties of matter by making SPOOKY SLIME with a group from Ann Arbor!
